Lending a hand to Hartville residents after blaze destroys only grocery store

HARTVILLE, Mo. -- Hartville residents get a hand "up" after a fire destroys the town's only grocery store.

The blaze at "Town and Country" left many folks without an easy way to get food.

On Saturday, local churches partnered with Angel Food Ministries to bring in a semi load of food for residents. Ten-thousand free boxed meals were handed out to hundreds of people who lined up.

About 25% of Hartville's population is below the poverty line. Many of those don't have an easy way to get to grocery stores in Mansfield or Marshfield.

Volunteers from faith organizations spent their day unloading the semi and handing the meals out to the crowd that was lined up hours early.

Volunteers also delivered meals to shut-ins and the elderly who were not able to make it to the event.

The boxed meals included enough food to last a family several days.

KY3 is told the grocery store will be rebuilt, though it may be a year-long process.
